  • Vintage to me means soft colors and unique details, those perfect authentic finds that will just fit. Be original!

Back in the day, ice cream was a delicacy, especially in the 18th century when an ice-cream social was a rare, special occasion. As refrigeration became a mainstay, ice-cream parties became particularly popular at churches and social clubs. But we think that this ice-cream party is the cutest one yet!

We set the scene in Bre Rountree’s colorful kitchen in Valencia, California. An interior designer and owner of Breezy Designs, Bre loves all things vintage and isn’t afraid of vibrant hues. “I love using pops of color with neutrals. I painted my kitchen island with a bright aqua and added pops of yellow along with the aqua for a bright color splash,” Bre says.

To give our party a back-in-the-day look and feel, we used Depression-era bowls, dishes and cups—perfect for displaying toppings and candy. Milk-glass pieces also look right at home at an ice-cream party. A hobnail coneshaped vase filled with pink carnations is a delightful addition to the décor and looks like a delicious ice-cream cone.

To find these treasures, Bre says, “I like to venture into small town shops. It’s there where you’ll be surprised. I like to find vintage as well as reproduction vintage.” Bre’s aesthetic worked perfectly with our ice-cream party. She says, “Vintage to me means soft colors and unique details, those perfect authentic finds that will just fit. Be original!”

    Dessert Island.

Set out candy-colored bowls with treats like cookies, confections and ice-cream-cone cupcakes. Striped straws and vintage-inspired tea towels will set the scene. You can’t go wrong if you stay within a pastel color palette. Use a kitchen island as the hub for the party, and create your ice-cream station with customizable toppings.

    Sign Language

Chalk paint and white paint pens are all you need to turn any flat surface into an ice cream parlor-worthy sign and fun piece of decor. Create something eye-catching to set out by the entryway, or use the sign to point guests where to find serving pieces or ingredients.

    Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

    What you’ll need:
    Boxed cake mix
    Ice-cream cones
    Pastry tip
    Premade frosting
Toppings of choice (such as sprinkles)

    What you’ll do:
    | 1 | Preheat the oven to 350°F. | 2 | Use boxed cake batter and follow the directions. | 3 | Spoon 3 tablespoons of batter into each ice-cream cone (you can find the colorful cones at your local grocery store). Place the cones in a muffin tin and bake for 15 minutes. | 4 | Once the cones are cooled, use a five-starred pastry tip to give the frosting a swirled texture. Top with whipped cream and sprinkles, and display them on stacked cake stands.

    Awesome Sauce

An ice-cream social isn’t complete without all the fixings, like hot fudge. Display garnishes in glass jars for guests to pour themselves. Set them in a basket filled with crinkle-cut shredded paper for a sweet look.

    Tempting Toppings.

Offer plenty of options for toppings in Depression-glass and Pyrex bowls, including mainstays like chocolate chips. But don’t be afraid to think outside the box too; cereals, mini pretzels or even edible glitter make unexpected toppings. Don’t forget a cherry on top!

Darling Décor: DIY Ice-Cream Cone Bunting

    What you’ll need:
Burlap banner (or pieces of burlap and twine)
    Scrapbook paper
    Scissors
    Hot-glue gun

    What you’ll do:
    | 1 | An ice-cream party isn’t complete without sweet décor. To make the ice-cream-cone bunting, start with a burlap banner (or cut out burlap triangles and attach them to a piece of twine). | 2 | Using colorful, patterned scrapbook paper, cut out ice-cream scoop shapes (see the example in the photo). Hot-glue the scoops to the tops of the burlap triangles—the bigger they are, the more impact they’ll have on the overall look. Hang the bunting when finished.
